You may be wondering “should I get gut microbiome sequencing?” On Instagram @AndreaHardyRD, I talk all about gut microbiome sequencing whether or not it’s something you might want to consider to learn more about your gut microbiome.

Science.isn’t.there.yet. 💩

Gut microbiota sequencing kits:

❕cannot be used to see how ‘normal’ your gut microbiome is

❗cannot tell you what kinds of supplements you need

❕cannot be used to diagnose disease or disease risk

🚨Reality check🚨

We just don’t have the research and data yet to say ‘these microbes definitely cause this disease or definitely harm our health’.

It would be SO cool if we did – and I truly believe we will one day! But at this point people are drawing meaning from tests when we just don’t have the data to back it up.

Because our gut is an ecosystem, it’s normal to have microbes that are associated with disease in our gut. They’re kept in check by the other microorganisms and for the most part, they live in harmony. Presence doesn’t necessarily mean disease.

Likely, as we move ahead, I expect the gut microbiome will have utility in assessing how a person will respond to drugs, like chemotherapy or immunosuppressants, understanding their function in disease, not just presence, and providing microbiota targeted interventions.

So – exercise patience, and save your 💸💸💸
