There are so many different probiotics on the market, but which one is right for you? On Instagram @AndreaHardyRD, I talk all about the important questions to consider before deciding to take a probiotic.
Pick a probiotic properly.

โ
The amount of misinformation out there about probiotics is ASTOUNDING.โ
โ
โMYTHSโโ
– everyone should take a probiotic supplementโ
– you just need to pick a probiotic with the right amount of microbes โ
– ‘just pick a probiotic with Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium’โ
– all probiotics don’t work (a common hot take by the media… effects are STRAIN SPECIFIC people!) โ
โ
โ
FACTS:โ
โ
๐ฆ certain STRAINS of probiotics have evidence for specific conditions and clinical endpointsโ
๐ฆ ISAPP (International scientific association for probiotics & prebiotics) requires that the strain be supported by at least one positive human clinical trial conducted according to generally accepted scientific standards (obviously – more trials = more heavily weighted evidence, but! It’s rare that probiotics will have the same extent of as a drug so we need to reflect upon the difference and possible applications)โ
๐ฆ dose DOES matter, but – it’s condition and strain specific (more โ better)โ
๐ฆ measuring expected outcomes DO matter – for example the AGA guidelines on probiotics only looked at 2 clinical endpoints for IBS – global symptom response and abdominal pain – when in fact there is a variety of end points for which evidence exists to support a trial of probiotics in IBS (and many studies were excluded due to not having access to the data)โ

โญ probiotics can be used to attempt ‘marginal gains’ in IBSโ
โญ they are a safe, possibly effective strategy to improve specific symptoms โ
โญ a trial of probiotics to assess outcomes in individual patients is my approachโ
โญre-evaluation of efficacy is KEYโ
โ
โ
I get a TON of questions in my DM’s on which probiotic a person can take. 2) Talk with your digestive health dietitian – they can provide individual guidance on your case! Our teamย @ignite.nutrition.incย can help with that โ
